In October 2022, in response to calls from within the community for changes to sentencing, the Attorney-General, Shane Rattenbury MLA, announced the Government’s decision to establish the Law Reform and Sentencing Advisory Council (the Council) to advise the ACT Government on areas of potential law reform and provide expert advice on sentencing.

Who we are

The Law Reform and Sentencing Advisory Council has a number of members with a wealth of expertise in law reform and sentencing matters.

The Council has 13 members drawn from legal and justice organisations and agencies as well as the wider local community.

The Council Chair is Lisbeth Campbell, a former ACT Magistrate from 1998 to 2023. Meet the Council Chair and members here.

What we do

The Council has a dual purpose:

  • a law reform role, which will support the ACT Government to improve Territory laws by inquiring and reporting on law reform matters referred to it by the Attorney-General
  • a sentencing advisory role, which will include providing policy advice on sentencing related matters at the request of the Attorney-General, monitoring and reporting on sentencing trends and practices and engagement with the community on these issues.
